Beneath the Surface, Part 1: The Gallery

Beneath the Surface, the show that Tawny Maclachlan Capon and I did this past weekend, welcomes you.

The Gabriola Arts & Heritage Centre, on Gabriola Island, is a former one-room schoolhouse, later the Gabriola Women's Institute. A few years ago it came into the hands of the Gabriola Arts Council, which did a beautiful job of renovating it into a multi-purpose gallery and meeting space.

As Tawny said in her notes: "Why make art during a pandemic? Because it's a focus, it helps to understand, it gives one the chance to take a break from fear, fatigue, sadness, and confusion. It helps to share with others. Maybe it brings 'joy'."

Under COVID protocols, the space could accommodate up to 16 people, who wore a mask, signed the contact sheet, and used hand sanitizer before entering the gallery. Many expressed gratitude at being able to get out and see some art on a beautiful fall weekend.

Stay tuned for Part 2: The Work
