The Big Reveal

"Here Be Monsters"(2016) 51"(w) 63 1/2"(h). Hand embroidery, cotton on linen.
Here I am with it, just so you can get an idea of the scale.
The text (tiny letters along one of the rhumblines) reads "What would an ocean be without a monster lurking in the dark? It would be like sleep without dreams." A quote by Werner Herzog, who knows a thing or two about monsters and dreams.
More to come.

Intrepid! That's what your piece says to me. And in the background I can hear that good ol' National Geographic intro music. I say this because I started reading Edmund de Wall's The White Road, which is all about the origins of porcelain. He speaks about Jesuit explorers who went to China and recorded all they could about porcelain production and the lives of people and just about anything that they observed. They may have been employed by the Catholic church but they acted more like National Geographic explorers. They were observers, sending the latest discoveries back to the Old World.Your piece, based on images drawn by one of those international Jesuits, has that same quality. What looks like slightly comical depictions of implausible monsters, were really, to the 17th century European, glimpses of a fantastic New World. We look today at pictures of Mars in the same way. Very good of you Heather to remind us that we haven't changed so much in 300 years. Jean-Pierre
