Procrastinating

I have finished the main part of the welcome mat. Have to finish the edges and I am thinking about doing a braided border. I'd much rather play with this than organize my notes for the amulet workshop tomorrow. Sigh. Life would be so much easier if I just did what is at the top of the list.

But anyways, back to the mat! I sent this picture to my landlord - it is a gift for him after all - and he responded by saying "It's very cute, must have been a lot of work." Ouch!!! Two slams in ten words. Although to be fair to him, he probably doesn't know anything about textiles and maybe recognizing it as "being a lot of work" is a compliment. A lot of times people just don't know what to say. And there is always the possibility that my ardour for a recently completed piece may not be shared by everyone. Or anyone, for that matter.

Back to more pressing matters. Just needed to get that off my chest.

  1. I would love it if someone made me that--but yes, if they don't understand textiles or hand work, it's a slam dunk that was a compliment. Love the clarity of shape and colour you got with your fine hand!

  3. very true, some people just don't get it. but he managed to build a dome?! you would think there would be something there...

i have 2 neighbor ladies whom i visit with many an evening, who haven't got a creative bone in their bodies. but they have learned just by watching me, how long a project can take and it has expanded their view on handwork. and i have opened their eyes to birdwatching too. so all is not lost.

  4. well hmmm... Heather really it is a cartoon critter don't you think?
I remember feeling a bit offended when my teachers at art school didn't think my fabulous fish tank with the sandblast carved edges replete with real neon fish was seen as a nice fish tank but not art. My good friend Old Man Crow visited the next day and he also thought it was a nice fish tank, that helped me see it objectively & realiz that's all it was & I happily kept those little fish in it for years.
So what I'm sayin; is you have made a very good doormat, it is well crafted & amusing but it is not in the same league as your Codex!

I certainly hope that nobody will be scraping mud from their boots off on that very nice "doormat". Maybe a door tapestry? Your landlord was just echoing my Mom's trusty go-to phrase. "There's a lot of work in that." She never meant it as a slam-dunk put-down. She just didn't know how to express thoughts while looking at art/craft. Another was, "That's lovely." And the ever-popular, "Well, just look at that!" Jean-Pierre
