I finally have had a bit of time to read your posts and think about what you have said.
It is true that there are crafts that are coming to the end of their life span in Japan. There are others though (pottery, word work, sake brewing) that are still part of the contemporary scene.

There is Bamboozling and there is bamboozling. You've made a very good observation. If there is so much crafting going on, why isn't it more visible? I don't know and if you have the chance to visit Japan again some day I think it would be fascinating to try and find out where all the handmade production goes. There's a really great project in there. For example, I know a cafe where the owner holds a knitting circle every friday. This group of women get together and compare their works and learn from each other. I wonder where all that knitting goes after it is completed. You could ask them.

Great series of photos and comments.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288094.post-72583042674096642172008-03-24T02:27:00.000-07:002008-03-24T02:27:00.000-07:00It certainly sounds and looks like you had a fanta...It certainly sounds and looks like you had a fantastic time out there. I envy you your trip to Japan, and "oh well, sigh" about the Japanese "craft" scene -- I still love those books -- there are even a few on Nordic knitting that I'm thinking about!MaryjoOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12861945604000052572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288094.post-27526743487992152132008-03-12T18:28:00.000-07:002008-03-12T18:28:00.000-07:00yes, let's hear it for slow cloth and spectacular ...yes, let's hear it for slow cloth and spectacular shibori. sure did enjoy this post - took it slow and savored every word, every picture.jeanne, herselfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07290923939461369115noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288094.post-35067857928893087192008-03-11T10:32:00.000-07:002008-03-11T10:32:00.000-07:00everything is moving too fast. it will all explode...everything is moving too fast. it will all explode soon. beautiful shibori.judehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08093892425910458016noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288094.post-63125637892010499852008-03-11T06:31:00.000-07:002008-03-11T06:31:00.000-07:00Thank you for a wonderful post. Beautiful picture...Thank you for a wonderful post. Beautiful pictures and interesting information. Sibori has always boggled my mind--it doesn't seem humanly possible. And like you I'm disappointed that the Japanese craft world is becoming commercialized, but I bet those rebel craft people are there, too. We'll have faith.Kayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05669924514599648160noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288094.post-15173892000885134182008-03-11T02:16:00.000-07:002008-03-11T02:16:00.000-07:00I believe that's the problem of many industrially ...I believe that's the problem of many industrially advanced cultures - people live faster and want to squeeze more jobs into smaller amount of time, so they can't afford to spend endless hours on traditional handcrafts. Let's hope there'll always be enthusiasts to keep up or revive those traditions! *^v^*Brahdelthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01398391384785892127noreply@blogger.com
